A man who found an Olympic ticket in London managed to return it to its owner using Twitter.

On 3rd August, Cameron Montgomery came across a ticket, while he was at a North London train station. The Olympic ticket was for the track-and-field events at the Olympic Stadium later that day, and cost over £300. Acting on impulse, he felt that it was his duty to return it to the man named on the ticket.

Montgomery explained to Mashable how he frantically attempted to track the man down, upon making the find. “With each ticket having a name on it, I went about looking for the person on the Internet,” Cameron said. His search included “looking at Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter,” but the search was unsuccessful, so he took to Twitter to see whether at owner would come forward.

Montgomery tweeted: “Sooooo has anyone in the Farringdon area lost an Olympic Games tickets. Found one this morning?” As friends jokingly attempted to get in on the action, to claim it as their own, Cameron even remarked: “im hoping this will be one of those twitter brings out the best in humanity stories.”

Hours later, a tweet would be sent back in Montgomery’s direction; one sent by the owner: “hi guys, this may be my ticket, please call me and I will give details to prove it is mine,” with his number attached.

The rest of the day saw Mike Boag, who had lost the tickets, speed off to collect them from Cameron, with just enough time to get to the event. “He rushed over to my office and collected the ticket all with about an hour to go to get to the stadium to see the start!” Montgomery said. “He was a bit stressed out and relieved, but thankful for what I did.”

On closing, Cameron stated that the social media network was, for him, the most effective medium to return the ticket to its owner. “Twitter was a much better tool in finding the owner than it was going to the box office [or] Olympic Park.” He even made an announcement via Twitter that the hunt was over: “Ticket has be claimed, nice work twitter, high fives for everyone.”
