Kenyan Man Wheels Around Africa to Raise £2m
A wheelchair-bound man from Kenya is attempting to raise £2 million to develop a spinal injury rehabilitation centre in Nairobi.
Zackary Kimotho, who was shot in the back eight years ago in a carjacking, is pushing himself around Africa in an attempt to fund the medical centre. The Bring Zack Back Home initiative aims to raise enough awareness to accumulate the 250 million Kenyan shillings required to build a spinal injury specialist unit.
Currently, there are no such facilities able to accommodate for Zack’s needs in the whole of East Africa. His efforts will be made to satisfy the requirements of himself thousands of Kenyans also suffering with back and spine injuries.
It’s been said that to rehabilitate an individual from such a spinal injury, it would cost 9 million shillings, but this isn’t a figure any Kenyan could realistically ever afford. The proposed centre would be used by as many as 75,000 injured people, who are currently being given inadequate care.
The journey is 4,000km and will take him from his hometown, all the way to South Africa. Zack began the journey in June, and he completed the first phased by traveling 115km by 17th August. Over this time period, he managed to raise 73 million Kenya shillings – enough to begin the planning of the medical unit.
“I am determined to embark on a long journey,” Kimotho said before he began the first phase. “A journey of hope.” His fundraising efforts are being backed by the local charity Kenyan Paraplegic Organization and already has corporate support. However, he is currently awaiting the renewal of his fundraising license, before continuing.
