Olympics Baton Passed on to Rio de Janeiro

The Closing Ceremony to round off the historic 2012 London Olympic Games took place last night at the Olympic Stadium.

With its full 80,000 capacity in use, attendees witnessed a magnificent show to culminate two weeks of high-quality sporting action. Athletes from 204 different countries gathered together in a Union Jack formation, which British music stars performed their hits of the past few decades.

Everyone from the Ray Davies to One Direction and lots in between sang their chart smashes to the thousands in attendance and millions watching from home. The event was full of surprises. In addition high choreographed dances, the Spice Girls, the Who, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah George Michael and more sang at the event.

The event signified the passing of the torch on from London to Rio de Janeiro, who will host the upcoming Olympic Games in 2016. London Mayor Boris Johnson had the duty of passing on the Olympic flag to the International Olympic Committee’s Jacques Rogge. The IOC’s president  then presented to Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Among those who attended the event were Prince Harry and Prime Minister David Cameron, who witnessed the perfect way to end such a momentous occasion. Team GB went home with 65 medals: 29 of which were gold; 17 silver; 19 bronze.
